WORLD RECORDS: great catches of April 2017

Angler Christine Ren Fielding, MD, of New York, USA caught and released this beautiful brown trout (Salmo trutta) while fly fishing
the Rio Grand River in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina on March 29th. Fielding skillfully played the massive 13.6 kg (30 lb) brown for 20 minutes after the fish ate the green scud pattern fly she was casting. Once landed, the fish was quickly documented, weighed, and then released alive to grow even bigger. If approved, the catch will earn Dr. Fielding the new women’s 8 kg (16 lb) tippet class record, which is currently vacant.

Angler Adam Garcia has added another potential record cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) to his resume, with this incredible 10.88 kg (24 lb) fish he pulled from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, USA on April 17th. Garcia caught the potential record cutthroat casting a Marabou jig from his light tackle spinning outfit. After a nice fight, Garcia managed to land, document and release the fish – the potential new men’s 6 kg (12 lb) line class world record, which currently stands at 6.35 kg (14 lb).

The IGFA recently received the world record claim for this massive 361 kg (795 lb 13 oz) swordfish (Xiphias gladius), caught by Kiwi angler Nicky Sinden on March 22nd while fishing off Whangaroa, New Zealand. Sinden was fishing aboard the Game On, captained by David Woodman, and needed approximately one hour to land the fish on 60 kg (130 lb) tackle. If approved, Nicky’s catch will be the heaviest broadbill by a female angler ever recorded by the IGFA, and one of the heaviest of all time! Congratulations to Nicky Sinden and the team of Game On!

On April 17th, while fishing out of Bay of Islands, New Zealand, Kiwi angler Kylie Jacobsen potentially set the new women’s 8 kg (16 lb) line class world record for striped marlin (Kajikia audax) with this impressive 160.4 kg (353 lb 10 oz) specimen caught aboard the Hookin’ Bull, captained by John Batterton. Kylie, daughter of famed record-chasers Eryn & Guy Jacobsen, could potentially break a record that was set by her mother back in 2005; a stripey that weighed in at 125 kg (275 lb 9 oz). Congratulations to the Jacobsen family and the Hookin’ Bull teams on yet another impressive world record catch!
